Shireoaks on the Chesterfield Canal is a SYPAC Access Water which full members can fish on production of a current membership card. It starts just below picturesque Turnerwood, where fishing is not permitted in the large pound in front of the row of terrace houses, runs through the village of Shireoaks, passing under the road at Bridge 38 and ends at the concrete road bridge in Shireoaks where the Grafton AA stretch commences.
This one mile section of the Chesterfield Canal is the home to eight locks and associated run offs, it rises thirty feet between Bridge 39 (the concrete road bridge on the Worksop side of Lock 44) and Turnerwood.
The well oxygenated water is the home to many small lively fish that can be seen darting about in the pounds, whilst the larger chub and bream move at a more leisurely pace as they prowl the water lingering near the runs offs and locks looking for food on the surface and in the depths.
A roving approach with a greased line and surface bait often produces chub two pounds plus especially in the warm summer evenings. On street parking is available in Shireoaks.
Fishing is not permitted on three parts of this stretch of the canal:
1. On the ‘duck sanctuary’ – the stretch immediately upstream of bridge 38 to the gates of the transport company yard.
2. In front of the bungalows immediately downstream of bridge 38.
3. In Shireoaks Marina.
