River Don

Description

This is a section of the River Don at Niagara behind the South Yorkshire Police Sports and Social Club playing fields.

The fishery was originally developed by the Niagara Committee in the early 1990’s under the direction of Roger Vickers and with advice from Environment Agency Fishery Inspectors.

A number of small weirs providing fish holding areas and deeper water were created.

Sheffield City Council has now formed a strategy group to develop all Sheffield’s rivers. Our Club are in liaison with that group as the River Don at Niagara falls within its remit.

The river holds chub, brown trout and silver fish such as perch and roach.

The banks can be very slippery – so please be careful and the water levels can rise dramatically in summer as rain falls on the hills upstream, so don’t get cut off from the path.

The best route to the river is by parking next to the Club House at Niagara. Walk towards the high trees alongside the bowling green and the tennis courts – an indistinct path can be found in the left hand corner of the trees – it is steep and in need of repair and will not be suitable for older or disabled anglers.

Once down by the river you can walk along a stretch of about 100 metres to find a suitable swim. Casting can be difficult due to overhead trees and a short rod or pole is the order of the day.

Species and What Works

Catch returns have included Brown Trout, Roach, Perch and Chub. In summer there is a large number of Minnows, which can be a nuisance when you are using small baits. The venue responds well to stick float tactics.

Beware fishing over depth as the river is shallow and can be snaggy if debris has been carried down in flood conditions!
