Early Days - Sheffield & Rotherham Constabulary

Retired Police Sergeant Terry Jowle has kindly provided the following information.

"To the best of my recollection this is how the club started.

About the end of 1970 I took over as Secretary of the Angling Section of the Force Sports and Social Club, from Dennis Oldfield (A traffic PC at West Bar).  He had already made enquiries about the lease of the pond at Barlborough Hall, and I continued negotiations with the College Bursar.

I had a meeting with the then Chief Constable, who I think was Mr. Barker, sometimes known as the "flour grader" because he always wore a bowler hat and carried an umbrella.  He agreed to the formation of a private Angling Club provided that it totally self supporting and that we did not approach the Sports and Social Club for any finance.

Meetings were held and a Club formed.  My shift Inspector, Lol Gregory was appointed Chairman and I took on the roll as Secretary/Treasurer.  I think this was in 1971.

In 1972 we paid to have the pond dredged by Harry Hodges a Demolition Contractor from Attercliffe and working parties we arranged for members to tidy up the site and make the boundary fences secure.

Both the Club and the Angling Section went from strength to strength, so eventually I handed over the running of the Angling Section to Keith Moorhouse.

I continued to run the club until I handed over to Ken Horsfield prior to my retirement.

I retired on 2 January 1983 and moved to Scotland, where I continued angling until 1994 when I underwent an operation for cancer. From then on my fishing was somewhat curtailed.

In 1999 just before I moved back to North Yorkshire I underwent emergency major heart surgery and have not done any fishing since.

I have attached three shots of the pond at Barlborough taken in 1972 just after it was dredged.

I hope this information helps."
