Colwyn Lake - WWS2

Colwyn Lake - Westwoodside 2 ( when the Club were first negotiation for the lake it had no name hence WWS2)

Description

This is the Club competition water where members can book matches.

The depths vary between 8 – 10 feet with shallower margins. The banks are well contoured and pegs (numbered) have been set up along with fishing platforms.

The lake has 18 pegs which number clockwise around the lake starting at the corner nearest to the car park and access track. Match bookings are managed by Clive Westlake the match secretary and details of matches in addition to being shown on the Club website at ‘Match Information’  are posted by the bailiff (Robin Aconley) on the notice board by the car park just off the road.

You can drive closer to your pegs using the paths around the site. The toilet at the site serves both ponds and is available from May to September. When the water is not being used for match fishing then members are welcome to pleasure fish the venue – keep nets should only be used in matches.

Species and What Works

Many of you will fish matches at this lake. It is well stocked with carp and silver fish.

Here is some useful info prepared by Steve Abbott on the pegs and what works.

Many a visitor to our match lake are first time visitors and as a consequence are unfamiliar with the pegs and methods to use so I will give a brief description of each peg.

Peg 1 - not the best of draws, it is in a bay with no island to cast to. It’s mainly a pole peg you will catch but other pegs are at a distinct advantage. I drew here on the first match ever fished I came second with 2 carp for 18lb, one 11lb and one at 7lb.( Marks out of 10 - 5 )

Peg 2 - it’s always nice to put your hand in the draw bag and pull this one out, its a flier - you can cast to the island with either waggler or feeder for carp, or pole fish anywhere from right under your feet to 16 meters. (Marks out of 10 - 9)

Peg 3 - is again a pole peg no island to fish to, but don't let that put you off as matches are won from here, especially when the water is a bit colder. (Marks out of 10 - 5)

Peg 4 - is a very good out an out pole peg. No island to fish to, but lots of matches are won here. You must plum up properly as the bottom is very uneven. One to win from. (Marks out of 10 - 8)

Peg 5 - similar to peg 4 only you have reeds on the bank at either side of you where fish can be lost. No island to fish to but plenty of water to attack with pole, waggler or feeder. (Marks out of 10 - 6)

Peg 6 - what can you say about this peg, its got the lot, it should win every match. Only anglers choose the pole instead of the feeder or waggler fished to the island. There is the slope of the island as well as a gravel bar towards the point of the island where the carp like to hang out. (Full marks 10 out of 10!)

Peg 7 - is a shorter cast to the island than peg 6 but the shallower water tight to the island, where carp like to feed, has reeds growing there. Fishing shallow tight to these reeds will produce some nice carp.  A good draw! (Marks out of 10 has to be 8)

Peg 8. Is the same as peg 7, but the pole is also worth a try at 13 meters. (Marks out of 10 - 8)

Peg 9 - a good peg - it’s on a point with only a short cast to the island which is reed lined. Lots of carp hang around here. It’s also a good pole peg right from under your feet to 16 meters (Marks out of 10 a definite 9!)

Peg 10 - draw this peg if your wife wants to go shopping - don't bother fishing take her!!!
(Marks out of 10 - 1)

Peg 11 - this peg in my opinion needs moving 10 meters to the left where it would be a flier!  You would be close to the point of the island, as it is you can still reach the island, but it’s further to cast and would probably interfere with peg 10.  I must say though I have seen plenty of carp caught on the pole at this peg. (Marks out of 10 - 6    Moved to the left 10!).

Peg 12 - a good draw but some times can be very frustrating. For some reason the carp spook easy in this peg - you are close to the island, also to your right you have the slope of the path to the island to fish to pole and waggler. (Marks out of 10 - 8)

Peg 13, 14, 15 – are all very much the same, a long cast to the island, but don't neglect the open water. There are better draws, but stick at it you can win from here. (Marks out of 10 - 6)

Peg 16 - sticks out like a saw thumb. On a point - close to the island for waggler and bomb. A good pole peg also. (Marks out of 10 - 9)

Peg 17 - a long cast to the end of the island, accurate casting with a feeder to build up a swim works well. Also pole works well close in. (Marks out of 10 - 7)

Peg 18 -  in a bay plenty of fish on the pole line. Perhaps the best silver fish peg on the lake. Matches are won here. (Marks out of 10 - 7)

For those of you pleasure fishing – my favourite tactic is to fish peg 7, use cat food or luncheon meat about 3 feet in front of the reeds to the left and right of the peg. As dusk settles the fish will move in to feed and give some excellent sport.
