Chesterfield Canal - Ranby
We have a long lease on the fishing rights for the Northern bank of a 2,000 yards stretch of the Chesterfield Canal at the Ranby Estate, Nottinghamshire, from the ‘Barracks’ on the outskirts of Ranby Village to bridge 53 at Barnby Wharf.
 | | | Forest Top Lock - below towards Barnby Wharf. | Stretch above towards Green Mile Lane Bridge 52. |
The canal has one lock – Forest Top Lock – just west of Barnby Wharf, two bridges 52 & 53 and at two points overhead power lines cross the canal. There 70 fishable pegs.
The water holds a good head of roach, perch, chub up to 3lbs, jack pike, some bream and tench. It would assist if members could report catches via Forum for the information of the Management Committee.
Members can book matches on this water.
| | | Bridge 53 at Barnby Wharf - towards Forest Top Lock. | Shoal of large chub near the Barracks - June 2007. |
Two bailiffs have been appointed and Club signs erected clearly indicating our stretch.
British Waterways are responsible for maintaining the banks and at our request have recently cut back the undergrowth and trimmed the hedges.
At some points on the canal reeds in the margins are quite thick, so it may be advisable to take a cutter with you, but there are plenty of fishable pegs.
The water was formerly leased by the Retford & District Angling Association which has now been formed into the smaller Retford Canal Angling Society and they retain the Cemetery Stretch at Retford and canal between Bridge 51 Ranby Village and where ours commences at the 'Barracks'.
The canal to the east of our stretch between Bridge 53 at Barnby Wharf and the Cemetery Stretch at Retford is under the control of the Derbyshire County Angling Club. Click here for more information.
